- My name is Nathan. I was born 5 weeks early on January 7, 2005 to my biological parents. I met my earth parents when I was 11 days old. Through my 3 years on earth, I developed several disabilities but my Mommy & Daddy made me feel perfect. I went back home to be with Jesus on May 4, 2008. The doctors called it children's Interstitial Lung Disease (chILD). It progressed very fast. My mommy is writing this blog to help remember my life and educate everyone about chILD.

Nathan's Story
The Meeting
Nathan was born Jan 7, 2005 to his biological parents. Danny and I recieved a call on Jan 11, 2005 for a newborn Foster Care placement. We were told he was a healthy little boy, he the 2nd son of the bio parents and he would most likely be available for adoption. Well... Danny and I were ecstatic! We couldn't wait to meet him. We finally got to meet him on Jan 18, 2005. He was absolutely perfect.
When I first met him, we looked in each others eyes and immediately bonded. It was amazing. He was so tiny only weighing 4 lbs 7oz and had a head full of black hair.
He was in the NICU because he had trouble eating. There was an NG tube placed to help with his feeding. An NG tube is a long thin wire placed through his nose, down to his belly to deliver food.
Over the next week, we worked on feeding with a bottle, we learned to care for him and watched him gain weight. We learned he had a condition called Microcephaly which means his brain is smaller than normal but we learned that all of bio mom's kids had small heads.
On Jan 26, we got to bring him home. We had prepared a room for him, bought all kinds of cute clothes, a stroller, a car seat and everything else you need for a baby. What was unusual was that we prepared for him in a week when most parents have 9 months!
We met the case worker and the DCFS worker at the hospital and they officially placed him in our home. Danny and I were so excited as we put him in the carseat. I remember that I had such a hard time putting him in the carseat and I was nervous. I thought for sure the caseworker was going to say - "Sorry, you can't have him if you can't figure out that 5-point puzzle harness!!" Little did we know what was to come over the next 3 years. He was so tiny in the huge carseat.
But what was wonderful, is that Danny and I brought him home from the hospital. We finally had our dream. Everything was perfect.
Over the next 3 years, we learned so much about caring for this little boy. We learned about the bio parents, the other six siblings, the other foster & adoptive parents and every disability and medical condition he had. We also learned that God gave us the perfect angel on earth.

Nathan is the 7th or 7 children. He has 2 sisters and 4 brothers. Mary and David live with their adoptive family in Freeburg. Crystal and Christopher live with their adoptive family in Highland. The two oldest brothers are adopted but not sure where they are.

Nathan's Medical History
Nathan was born 5 1/2 weeks premature. He was a little over 4 lbs. He stayed in the NICU at St. John's Merch for 11 days because he had trouble eating. As Nathan grew, he was faced with many different medical conditions. He was diagnosed with the following:
Mitochondrial Disease
Retinitis Pigmentosa
Children's Interstitial Lung Disease
Moderate Hearing Loss / tubes in his ears
Failure to Thrive
Severe GI reflux
Cerebral Palsy
Learning Disabilities
Nathan wore glasses and he was the cutest little boy ever when he would wear them. When he was mad, he'd take them off and throw them.
He had a Nissen fundoplication to keep food from coming back in to his esophagus. He had a G-tube placed for feedings because he refused to eat anything but McDonald French Fries!
He wore AFOs on his little tiny legs to help him stand up. He was just beginning to walk with his walker.

Our Journey to Adoption
This is the hardest part of the story to write. One day I will be ready to tell everyone about Nathan's journey to become our legal son. He was our son in every way except for a little piece of paper that needed signed by a judge. However, the journey was long and very painful.
